About DBA
Our Mission
More than just teaching the joy of movement and an appreciation of dance, our mission is to produce young adults who are leaders with personal life tools, a sense of conviction, and an appreciation of what can be accomplished through hard work and determination- a clear advantage to becoming successful adults.
Along with ballet, students are invited to take contemporary, musical theatre, jazz, irish, hip hop, lyrical jazz, street jazz and tap. Classes in these types of dance greatly improves their ballet training in all aspects. Douglas Ballet offers classes for everyone, at every level, from two years of age to adult. Students also have opportunities to perform and compete in festivals around the Lower Mainland.
Examinable Ballet
The examinable ballet curriculum taught at Douglas Ballet Academy follows the Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD) method. Established in 1935, the Royal Academy is an international organization of graded ballet syllabi designed to meet the needs of young people of all ages who would like to study classical ballet.
High School Credits
The BC Government has decided that students will get high school credits in Grade 11 and 12 for passing Royal Academy Ballet Exams grade 4 and up. Ask the studio for more information.

The Students and the School
Positive relations between the students at DBA are very important. With this in mind, the Student Council was formed as a medium in which social events are planned and the students are given the opportunity to help improve the school. The family atmosphere present at DBA lets students grow in a nurturing environment, while allowing them the opportunity to become professional, well-rounded dancers.
Performing and the DBA Performance Division
Dedicated DBA dancers have been given the opportunity to perform in many places throughout the community and the world. These include Spain, Alaska, Disneyland, New York City in 2008, as well as locally. These dancers also compete their pieces in local festivals, and to date have won numerous trophies, scholarships, and medals.
In June of each year, the entire school puts on full length performances at the Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby, and is a goal that the classes aim for.
The Mascot
Douglas Ballet's mascot is a cow! It was created in 1994 for the year end show, appearing with some Swiss Milkmaids. Since then, it has made its presence known in every show. The cow is a welcome sight, garnering a lot of laughs. It has taken on many roles, including a princess, volleyball mascot, on the farm, and in Switzerland. Many generations of DBA students have jumped at the chance to be part of the cow- either its' front or rear!
