Rebecca Woodruff - CDTA - Principal
Rebecca entered the dance world at an early age of three years old and has never looked back. Along the way she has trained extensively in ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, hip hop and musical theatre on scholarship at some of the most prestigious dance institutions in North America, including Randolph Academy, Los Angeles' Edge Performing Center and Millennium Dance Center. Throughout her studies, she has been grateful to have worked with some of the best dancers and choreographers in Canada and worldwide including Tyce Diorio, Nappytab, tWitch, Brain Friedman, Lorianne Gibson and Alex Wong.
Rebecca has had the privilege of dancing with Royal Winnipeg's finest, such as Evelyn Hart, Michael Faigaux, Jesus Corrales, David Lucas and Lissette Salgado in "Stars of Canadian Ballet". She has also danced for The Source Dance Company, as well as danced and choreographed for Velocity Dance Company. Over the past few years, Rebecca has appeared as a featured dancers and ensemble in many musicals including Kiss Me Kate, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, Wizard of Oz, Babes in the Wood and Fiddler on the Roof. She has also choreographed and performed in independent projects such as Vancouver's 12 Minute Max, Dancers for a Small Stage and Merge I, II, and II with Spectra Theatre.
Most recently, Rebecca has become a BCRPA certified fitness instructor and due to the benefits of pilates for dancers, received her STOTT certification in beginner and intermediate mat. In 2012 she received her teaching certificate from the Canadian Dance Teachers Association for Jazz and Tap and has over ten years of experience as a respected dance instructor. Rebecca has now fulfilled her life-long dream of owning a dance studio and looks forward to the year ahead.
Kelly Douglas - R.T.S., A.R.A.D - Artistic Director of Ballet
Vancouver trained dancer and teacher, Kelly Douglas has studied at The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, The Banff School of Fine Arts and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens with teachers such as Laura Alonso, David Earl, Lynn Seymour and David Wall. While with Alberta Ballet Company she danced in The Nutcracker, Firebird, Serenade, Facade, Allegro Brillante, Coppelia and Cinderella. Ms. Douglas received her Royal Academy of Dance teaching diploma in 1990 and was elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Dance. This qualifies her to teach the syllabus of the Academy and enter students to all levels of the Academy's examination. Kelly is also a member of the Imperial Society of Teaching Dance. She is currently a Practical Teaching Supervisor for the RAD.
Ms. Douglas has had more than two decades of teaching experience during which she has also choreographed and performed in independent dance projects such as Vancouver's 12 Minute Max and Dancing on the Edge, as well as the Sunshine Coast's Annual Celebration of Dance. Ms. Douglas was a guest teacher at the Ballet by the Sea Studio in Malibu, California for 7 years.
In July 2012, Kelly auditioned for and was accepted for one of four spots in North and South America to train to become an examine for the Royal Academy of Dance. After successful training in February and March in London England 2013, Ms. Douglas was appointed to the board of the International Panel of Examiners for the Royal Academy of Dance, making her one of fourteen in Canada. After running Douglas Ballet Academy successfully for 20 years, Kelly is happy to have found new owner for the Academy in Rebecca Woodruff and is delighted to stay on as Artistic Director of Ballet.
Leanne Barden - Ballet
Miss Barden is a certified RAD teacher, qualified to enter students into exams, as well as being a mentor for the Royal Academy of Dance. She is also certified in the Cecchetti method of ballet training. During the course of her career, as a member of the Vaganova Dance Society, Miss Barden has traveled extensively to Russia and Eastern Europe where she had the opportunity to study at the Mussorgsky Ballet Theatre with Anatoly Siderov and Regina Kumicheva.
Miss Barden has also trained in modern dance, receiving her BFA – dance major from Simon Fraser University in 2001.
Jen Basa - Ballet
A student of dance since the age of 4, Jen has trained and competed in modern, lyrical, jazz, tap, and stage as well as ballet. She has studied in RAD syllabus up to Advanced 2 level, and achieved Distinction in Advanced 1. With a view to better understanding how the body works, Jen also studied to become a trained Pilates instructor. Jen is also a practitioner and instructor of a barre style workout called the Dailey Method. Jen's main focus remains ballet, where she uses her training and experience to produce strong balanced dancers.
Anita DeSiena - Ballet
Anita has been studying dance at Douglas Ballet Academy since the age of five and has achieved her Advanced 1 award with the Royal Academy of Dance. As well as instruction in Classical Ballet and Character, Anita has also trained in Contemporary, Jazz and Tap. Anita has been a long term member of the Douglas Ballet Performance group, competing in many local festivals, performing at Disneyland and taking part in various workshops within the States. Anita is a fully qualified RAD teacher, which allows her to enter students into exams. Along with dance, Anita is also a certified Classroom and Community Support Worker and is currently employed by the Burnaby School District.
Missy Sciortino - Jazz and Lyrical
Missy has been teaching dance for 15 years and she has been studying dance for 25 years, first in Prince George at Judy Russell's Dance Studio and then at Arts Umbrella in Vancouver. While dancing professionally, Missy took the lead role of Clara in The Nutcracker with Edmund Kilpatrick of Ballet B.C. She also performed in Josie and the Pussycats alongside Tara Reid, Rosario Dawn and Leigh Cook. She danced in the movie Life or Something Like It with Angelina Jolie, the NBC T.V. show American Dreams, Disney's Animatrix and a Macy's commercial.
Missy has choreographed performances for the Molson Indy and many local promotional shows, and currently teaches the R.A.D. method of ballet as well as jazz and tap. Missy also danced in the movie Totally Awesome with Chris Kattan from Saturday Night Live. She recently performed in The Russian Queens at the Pan Pacific Hotel.
Kathryn Kazun - Street Jazz
Kathryn started taking class when she was 2 years old. She fell in love with ballet, and although she also trained in jazz, ballet remained her favorite and focus for the next 15 years at Douglas Ballet Academy. After a brief break from the dancing world she came back and found a new love in hip hop dance. She trained at Harbour Dance Centre where she was selected to be a part of Kill the Lights dance crew. Together they performed and taught at different events in and around Vancouver. She has been able to work with many notable dancers/choreographers including Eric Malapad, Richard O’Sullivan, Jheric Hizon, Nico Archembault, Bryan Tanaka, Marty Kudelka, Eddie Morales, Matt Cady, Megan Lawson, and JoJo Zolina. She continues to take class at Harbour Dance Centre and drops in to the Kill the Lights training sessions. She is currently focused on her teaching at DBA, and takes her teaching to elementary and high schools upon request. Dancing has always been a passion in her life, and she’s so happy to share her love of hip hop dance at DBA.
Angela King - Preschool Ballet, Musical Theatre and Tap
A student of Douglas Ballet since the age of 8, Angela has studied many dance styles. She has extensive training in ballet, jazz, tap, stage, and musical theatre. Angela has been a teacher's assistant at the studio for a number of years. Angela has competed in many local dance competitions as well as attending different dance conventions and workshops throughout the Lower Mainland and in the States. She performed in the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games. She has also appeared in many musical theatre productions including Aladdin, High School Musical 2, and Singing In The Rain. Angela is the recipient of various scholarships and awards for merit. As well as dance, Angela is also a accomplished pianist and vocalist.
Angelas is excited to be a part of DBA's teaching team and is thrilled to share her passion and love for dance with children.
Paula Riddell - Jazz and Hip Hop
Paula began her dance training as a gymnast and later dedicated herself to studying ballet, jazz, lyrical and hip hop. She completed her R.A.D. Ballet Examinations with distinction and has been an accomplished competitive soloist. Paula has competed internationally in Cheer and Stunt and has trained with University Teams. She was a successful high school Cheer Choreographer before returning to dance. She now brings her decade of experience and energetic dance style to Douglas Ballet Academy.
Hayley Williams - Acro
Miss Hayley has recently returned from dancing in California. Her talent extends off the dance floor as she first started to love dance through competitive gymnastics. She trained in competitive gymnastics for 10 years and when she retired at 16 she continued to dance with her gymnastics facilities teacher. During this time, Hayley was involved in many sports ranging from two different World Cheer teams to Acrobatics, but she always felt a special place for dance! Her various training is what landed her in many "Special Skills" roles for the Entertainment Industry including playing a cheerleader for the hit CW show HellCats. Hayley is a keen athlete who is committed to passing on her skills to the next generation.
Leslie Wilson - Irish Dance
Leslie is the director of Scoil Rince De Danaan and has successfully completed the Irish Dancing Commission's Teacher's Exam (T.C.R.G) in 2000. She has participated in numerous festivals, performances and competitions including the World Championships. In forming her own school she combines her love of dancing and teaching with her background in cultural anthropology. A student of indigenous cultures, Irish history and lore, Leslie introduces her students to Celtic mythology and Irish history, in addition to Irish Dance technique and choreography.
